Hyper Metroid was fun. Fairly frustrating at times with long stretches between saves and being on the verge of death most of the time. I like all the color swaps on items/sprites, though. The escape was fucking bonkers. It's like, 20 minutes long. Once you get about halfway through the game, the difficulty levels out a bit as you have more ammo and health. The Phantoon fight is still a pain in the ass, though.

I also enjoyed Retroid. It's a remake of the original Metroid with the Super Metroid engine.

Here's yet another horrible rendition from the same calendar. That artist could have learned from this thread...

They tried a bit here, actually. Sorry the late 80's, early 90's love of pixel art by Nintendo upsets you so much.

>you CANT print a display effect
Of course you can. If the game was really intended to look like it had scanlines all over the place it would be more than possible.

Actually I have to partially recant this, since after having gone through almost 10 years of Nintendo power calendars, I found one example. The fireballs and wings/eyes of the metroid there show scanline artifacts reproduced.

So it's not never ever, it's just almost never.
