That's one of the things I'm really liking about it so far. All of the secrets are actual hidden paths, rather than a door that has the same texture but slightly off color. And there's a lot of secrets. It still rewards you for being inquisitive but you don't have to hump walls. You just find some ledge off the side of a cliff and oh wow neat this leads somewhere. Get some rockets and maybe a key card, and then it loops back around to the main path. Or like, a couple bushes are hiding a small camp site with 3 or 4 packs of shells and a single medkit. And a lot of the secrets lead into other secrets, or bypass parts of the level.

A lot of the secrets would be totally lame if they were in vanilla, just from a power up perspective. A lot of them are just like a chaingun and some shells, but at least in the first two maps they're all amazing. Armor is kinda rare and it's only been green so far, and I would've had to retry the first map 5 or 6 times probably if I didn't find a couple hidden shells, a rocket launcher, or a green armor. And the knight on top of a soul sphere, throwing at you for half the level, is an amazing touch.

There's that soul sphere on a pedestal in a secret dark room early on in Ep1 in vanilla, but this takes it to another level. The vanilla secret just subtly taunts you with the soul sphere. This secret tells you to fuck off until you find the small path that leads up to the cunt guarding the blue ball that's been blue balling you for 15 minutes. You don't have the ammo to spare on gunning down a hell knight half a mile away when you first see him, but by the time you get up to him and find the secret you do. Killing him in the tight corridor and grabbing the soul sphere is really fucking satisfying.
