But wasn't he endorsing smash tournaments? At least I think he did for 4, and maybe Ultimate too.
Maybe what he didn't like was that people were using meta game (exploits, things that Sakurai didn't intend to be in the game), because he probably sees that as people breaking through his game, but I don't think he is against competition.
Also, the same way he said Smash is a "party" game on interviews, he also said it's a fighting games many times, so that's not an argument.
