Just got done testing input latency in Retroarch with iPhone high-speed camera and the frame counter, and the games literally have one frame of input lag (action displays the very next frame after input) with my freesync monitor and a DualSense controller (tested NES, SNES, and Genesis for now)

How the fuck is this possible? Even native hardware had 2-4 frames of input lag. I tested multiple games and it was always the very next frame. Why would anyone use native hardware if this is the case then?

And yes I did use run-ahead of [individual game input lag frames - 1], but this has nothing to do with processor, display, or controller latency. This is the more useful test for overall latency as anyone can easily do the pause + frame advance to determine input lag for the individual game, and then adjust run-ahead. However, run-ahead WON'T help with system/processing latency but it's still very next frame responsiveness.

I'm loving Retroarch so far, it's very convenient to have everything in one ecosystem, it's great to be able to create lists and be able to download the covers for the games, not to mention the excellent shaders and retroacheaviments.

But there's something I still don't understand, how do I change floppy disks on systems like a amiga or atari 800? Am I missing something here?

Am I wasting my time and money by not emulating? I used to feel pretty strongly about using the original hardware, I like the experience of it... but I also have a great PC that can run anything, and it makes me wonder what I'm doing modding my PS2, or hunting for a CRT. If I really wanted I could just get a Series X, a 4k TV, and use shaders and capture the original couch experience.
