Not him, but it's funny that in the Alundra thread someone is bemoaning the opposite take, that Zelda didn't influence very things nearly enough and that games in the vein are few and far between.

Which I wouldn't entirely agree with, but if you look at the way Doom's popularity made the fos genre blow up and start getting constant clones, or Street Fighter 2 doing the same thing and leading to a glut of fighting game spinoffs. Zelda remains a bit of it's own thing, there aren't a ton of games old or new that get referred to as Zelda clones and most that do like Alundra, Okami or Beyond Oasis are actually not very similar.

I don't think you shoot any aliens in EWJ that I can remember. Garbage dogs, demon cats, lawyers, villainous fish, evil slugbutladies...

I can't think of any aliens. I am more interested in why the snes version sucks, I barely played it. It makes me think of Beyond Oasis though. Super cool game but I heard many people complain that it controls like shit whichbI never understood. Then I tried the PAL version which is translated as Story of Thor (more accurate there) but something about how they coded it for the PAL genesis it's all laggy and borderline unplayable. Is SNES EWJ a similar deal? I played the fuck out of the one I had but only briefly on other friends just waiting so we could play SF or whatever.

Beyond Oasis rocks, it's Zelda mixed with a brawler.

I like Beyond Oasis far more, but it's more my taste of game. To me it's like an Action Adventure mixed with a Beat em Up the way you have to do a lot of crowd control at points and especially in the bonus dungeon. I've never actually played through LttP all the way, it's grown boring at some point every time but I've beat Beyond Oasis multiple times.

For a game that's similar but with more of a focus on combat, Beyond Oasis is pretty great.

I play most old games with the sound muted or down very low anyways. But true, it's soundtrack is probably that game's one weak point.

I like that Sega was more experimental. Their take on a strategy RPG feels faster paced and more arcadey than Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem. Their take on a Zelda style Action-Adventure plays like a mix between it an a Beat em Up. Experimenting with genres is always good in my books.

>the world is popping with that open life that lets you know your safe going anywhere and exploring, feeling like you'll always come across something. games today are so closed in, and not in the cozy isolated way either.

By the way when you actually go back and play it you will realize it's actually super linear. I'm not joking when I say it's like Zelda mixed with a beat em up, there are some bigish areas but many of the dungeons are corridors of waves of enemies.

It is fantastic and there's a decent sense of exploring at some points though. Be sure you don't miss the 100 floor bonus dungeon for example. Fucking awesome game. Personally I like it better than Zelda though they're honestly pretty different.

So would Secret of Mana count? Or not because you have more free range of movement?

Also the PAL version runs at a horrible framerate. I remember threads around here talking about how the game is choppy and controls like shit and never knew what they meant until I tried a playthrough of that version and realized it played like ass by comparison.

Yes you should forget about trying to get into them. It's clearly not a genre that interests you.

Maybe check out an action rpg of some sort, but likely just move on and waste no more time.

Guy who originally posted BO here and who agreed with him on preferring it to ALTTP. No trying to be contrarian or special snowflake, they're really just quite different games so they appeal to different folks.

They're different but I love them both. This level is gorgeous though so if I mention the games I usually post it.

Go try playing the NA release of Beyond Oasis and then the EU Story of Thor. The PAL version is almost unplayably bad.

Beyond Oasis doesn't even really have much of an Arabian feel to it other than the design of the main character's pants. Most of it looks pretty European influenced.

Beyond Oasis isn't really an RPG. It's even less of one than Zelda. It's almost a hybrid of Action Adventure and Beat 'em Up.

It's still a great game though.

Most modern action games (fighters, racers, FPS etc) run at 60 fps. Rpgs and the like don't, but they don't need to. Unless something needs 60fps timing, I'm happy to have it run at a lower speed to look better.

Always have been. Pic related is one of my favorite games despite it's frame rate.

>All these replies, no Beyond or Legend of Oasis

Sad these games are so overlooked. OP, I think these are actually two of the best retro ARPGs there are. Though they are closer to Zelda puzzle-action-adventure than the Mana games.

I think they're excellent though. They control like a cross between Zelda and a beat em up, it's really fun. There are multiple weapons, and you collect elemental spirits and use them to solve puzzles. Great bosses, amazing graphics for the systems. I highly recommend them.
