I'm doing a bit of research on older games, specifically trying to find one that punish the player for taking too long to complete them, but not in the sense of a hard time limit per level. Rather, I'm looking for games that have an overall difficulty ramp the longer the player takes to finish it.

So far, I've got a few examples, namely Star Control II in which the main antagonists will hunt down your potential allies and reduce the amount of support you get during the game, Fallout 1's mutant invasion wiping out towns the longer it takes for you to find the base and the cathedral, and while not exactly a time limit, Final Fantasy VIII becoming harder as you gain levels instead of easier, which punishes a player for fighting too many random encounters or grinding too much. Each of these feature a ramping difficulty where the game continually gets harder the longer you take, but doesn't outright give a failure state until the last moment.

It seems like this design was more common in older games, mostly retro ones, with very few modern ones having something similar. What does /vr/ think of this kind of difficulty scheme? What did players at the time think about it? I remember Fallout had a lot of consternation with people wanting to patch out the water chip and mutant base time limits, but I think it makes mechanical sense to keep them to put a strict time limit on how much time the player can spend improving himself.
