I don't even see them as rivals anymore. In America, Sega is still resentful with Nintendo (or with NoA), but in Japan, where the companies' hearts are, they seem like good buddies nowadays.

Now that makes sense. Nintendo wasn't in charge of that, that's why Sonic wasn't there.
If Nintendo was in charge of that they would have made it a Sonic & Mario at Olympics thing, with more than just Mario.

I wasn't aware about the Master System during the 3rd gen, and only had a Famiclone (I did know Sega for their arcades though, OutRun specifically, loved it).

From 4th gen and onwards, Segatendo idort for sure, there is no other way.
I was also a Segatendo portable idort with a Game Gear and a Game Boy.
