No one has ever made another game like Ecco. Even the fourth game was almost nothing like it, so there's really no competition. I will say this though, I like both of them better than any of Nintendo's first party stuff then.

Ecco is one of my favorite games ever and this is my suggestion. The port is incredible whether you use the 3d or not. Personally I like the Genesis sountrack better, though it is the version I played first.

These are the games I played in my youth and a lot of them are still really fun. I don't only like retro games though.
