There was nothing more ludo in my life than playing King's Field (US) and slowly figuring out the layout of the land. Exploratory games that tell you nothing like that are the best, even the fact that you have to talk to some witch in a hidden room to get a description of what items do was based beyond description.
I tried Shadow Tower Abyss and it wasn't as good after I realized how linear it felt.
