What went... Mediocre? Looking past the technology and multiplayer, the singleplayer is pretty boring by 90s FPS standards, and I don't see it mentioned much today.

Because of it's "influence"? Metal Gear Solid game out on the Playstation a few months earlier and Ocarina of Time only a few days after, you'd argue Half Life is more influential?
If you want to argue that Half Life did its """immersive""" take on shooters first, that would be Unreal earlier that summer of the same year.
