Ninja Gaiden has more consistent quality across the three games.

However, Castlevania III is the best game out of all 3 games being discussed.

Holy shit
I went back to play CV3 after marathoning all the metroidvanias and I'm shocked at much harder the damn thing is.

-Enemies are aggressive and start attacking the moment they are on screen, many of them can outrun and the ones that dont outrange.

-Practically all enemies have some random element to them like the bats flight pattern or the shuffling back and forth of the skeletons. Memorization only takes you so far, you need to be able to adapt fast.

-Resources are scarce. You have to balance the heart managament of 2 characters, while killing candles with subweapons to make the upgrades drop, and rationing the usage between the boss and stage segment.

-Boss's are brutally fast and hard hitting. Healing is rarely provided before the boss fight so if you got injured on the level you have to fight the boss with less than perfect health

-Death is crushing with a single failed jump causing you to all your hearts, you lose your subweapons and upgrades (it takes at least 2 stages to fully upgrade a subweapon) and go back to the level 1 whip

-Healing is sparse, taking an extra hit from a bat is going to affect your entire performance on the stage.

-No breaks. Practically every room in the game past the first stage is threatening. Strategically placed enemies (many respawning) punish the player for every second he hesitates.

Crap this game is hard. Its the only castlevania I could never beat because of that ridiculous final level.

The VRC6 chip didn't do all that much graphically. Compared to the international versions, the Japanese version of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse featured smoother sprite animation and more special effects in the backgrounds, but not much else. It did, however, add two extra square channels and a sawtooth channel. Compare the soundtracks and discover just how fucking GOAT the Japanese soundtrack is.
