Considering the town was quickly mashed up after 3DO realized that they failed with the Forge, it turned up pretty good both aesthetically and lore-wise. An arcane conflux conjured by the elemental lords to answer the threat of destruction of Enroth, a town of magic through and through.

Wtf faeries and "giant flamboyant chickens" that were part of original homm2 lineup are now somehow bad? Why? Phoenix is one of the coolest and most beautiful creatures in the game and elementals are fine, fitting the town just right, what is with the hate?

now that you mentioned it, homm3 lineups are far from perfect and I wouldn't be all that against mixing up the creatures around some, for better rosters/balance. H3SW roster in pic related is probably the best lineup in any heroes game ever imo. And the reason why the creatures are "simple" is quite a logical one and it was given by the devs, let me repeat it here:
>The dominant factors are "simplicity", which means that the creature must be well-known in popular culture and its name must be available to guess just while looking at its exterior, "mythological origin", which means that the creature is likely to come from mythology or old-age religious images, and "fairy-taleness" which means that the creature cannot be a grimdark D&D concept, it should look like a creature from a child game, when even the skeletons are smiling and zombies are clumsy. This is what pretty much defines the Heroes 2 creature pool.

I'm no fan of gremlins, but otherwise the tower units are just fine. I don't like the byzantine look either, but the castle itself is pretty sweet.

Inferno and Stronghold need some shoring up. All factions have a "castle" name, except inferno; shoulda been bastion or something (actually necropolis has the same problem, but not as bad). I can't even remember what most of the inferno dwellings look like; just kennels/fire lake/forsaken palace. All the heroes look the same. It needs a better design in general.

Stronghold is very bland and heavy-handed, and has the same problem with the dwellings (and their grail is shit-tier; a fucking spiky flag pole? rly). I also don't like behemoths; I get it, a big furry monster in a cave, the ultimate generic "monster", but it's just a sasquatch werewolf, and it doesn't fit the rest of the faction. I would have added homm2 style cyclopses with their cool black armor, stone/crystal pyramid, and eye lasers, and switched the rock-throwing to homm2 style trolls, who regenerate (and live in caves). Their grail should have been a colliseum or something; something grander. I think rock-throwing probably fits giant cyclopses better, while trolls are typically claw slashers, but that eye laser is too cool.

Russian here. I'm not really invested in HoMM, I just randomly stumbled upon this thread. I'll try to help a bit.

The latest update post was on January 17.
Here's my attempt on the translation.

"That's how creatures of our eight factions will look like in the upcoming beta. During discussions a lot of copies were broken, a lot of keyboards were wasted, a lot of brilliant ideas were tossed away. The content was heavily restricted by the concept of HoMM 2.

Maybe something will look off for your expectations, but keep in mind that the major part of our additions were made by the lesser evil principle, and every single creature in the bestiary has decent reason for it's existence."
