Nothing even remotely like that. They used digitized actors because it was easier compared to drawing sprites. The end result was just as cartoony tho, they never even attempted to deliberately strive for any sort of photorealism.

That was a completely separate convergent evolutionary dead-end. There were VHS-based games and so on. At that point you can say board games are photorealistic because you played them irl.

No, only in the 7th gen did games start deliberately and en-mass, which is key here, strive for photorealism in one way or another.

MKII had an atmosphere and mystique that the series never lived up to afterward. The color palette is really well-balanced and the levels have a sense of place that hints at something bigger. The sound design is really impressive and fluid and the game still looks great in motion.

I guess what does it for me is that there was some goofy stuff in II, but it was minimal, but by MK3 we already had multiple motocross robot ninjas and white Sub-Zero and baseball cop and Brave Starr.
