You might want to give Phantasia on the PS1 a try before Eternia. The game uses a modified Destiny engine from the previous game released in the series (making it more fluid than Destiny), but isn't quite a fluid as Eternia (which is understandable given that Eternia came out after Phantasia, and I can't really fault the game for that), which can make it a bit hard to go back to if you're more used to the fluidity of later games in the series. Still a fine game though; shame it never got localized but at least it's got various translation patches. That said, have fun when you get around to them; Eternia in particular is one of my favorite Playstation games.

If you can tolerate some anime influences, the Tales series tends to have fast paced real time oriented combat. As far as /vr/ recommendations, I'd say give Phantasia PSX with an English patch and Eternia (Destiny II in the US) a try. Especially Eternia, since that was where they really started to nail the fluidity of combat, and the encounter rate is neither too high nor too low (later games tend to use overworld enemy sprites that one can choose to avoid rather than random encounters as well).

Just don't expect story to be all that good, compared to other series where it's a major focus. Tales tends to have more focus on the characters, their interactions, and generally solid gameplay, and the story is usually at the very least tolerable.

I hear that games on newer systems can a bit harder to actually code a patch for, while there's a good amount of translation patches that have been made for games on earlier systems. Might have something to do with Phantasia being an easy focus for so many patches.

To be fair, the NDX bundle is the latest, and Absolute Zero wants to combine efforts with Cless to make the best translation for the game possible, since it doesn't appear that there will be a better version of the game being released anytime soon.

Probably some debate on what translation does the game true justice, or people wanting to do their own original spin on things. Probably why Cless has refused to use the Destiny Remake translation wiki as a base for his patch, as from what I've heard, the wiki just doesn't cut it that well to even be a base for an actual translation effort.

You just had to, didn't you?

Just how much of an improvement over the Absolute Zero's Phantasia PSX translation is Phantasian Productions'?

SNES version was ground breaking for it's time, though the DeJap translation can be quite immature at times. Playstation port has bonus content, combat more in line with the rest of the series (spells no longer freeze combat when cast, combat is smoother, etc), and the translation is more in line with what was originally intended. Either are better than the shitty GBA version.

You should also look into playing Eternia/Destiny II. Planning on playing my first time through it co-op with a friend later this summer.
