I dunno if you're joking, but there were a lot of revisions for NiGHTS, starting with it being a 2D button mashing game, though they were always explicitly against making a shmup. Yuji Naka ended up describing the game as "more like a race game than an action game." The A-Life part was one aspect of Yuji Naka wanting to make a game that rewarded replaying it. They seemed to be legitimately ambitious with what they wanted NiGHTS to be.
