Kind of a trick answers because you could inject quality production value in either genre and the game would become popular regardless of how objectively mediocre the "gameplay" was. Pretty pictures and animation and cool music go a long way for jrpgs or point-and-click games, but not as much for a platformer, with a couple exceptions.
