Not him but your list is pretty much entirely memorization based games which at the end of the day really aren't that hard. They take practice and patience to learn but that's about it. As you say the 1CC is a common arbitrary benchmark because without it any of these games are pretty easy.

Compare that to any fighting game.
1CCing Gradius, Super Ghouls N Gosts, Castlevania is absolutely nothing compared to beating Mortal Kombat 2 with a flawless victory every round or King of Fighters 98 without ever getting your first character to half health even.

You didn't make a list of hard games, you made a list of easy games that are kinda hard if you impose an arbitrary additional goal to beating it. And again similarly you completely ignore roguelikes because you know you'll never be able to clear even the simplest ones and not with some additional challenges added on top, just plain beating them vanilla.

Technically it was released for PS2 so here it counts as retro just as much as Pier Solar. 98UM is better, but it was just a randomly thrown together troll chart to start with.

>Why were fighting games in mid-00s so embarassed of being just fighting games?

This was in an era when arcades were is steep decline, but home internet for most people was not high quality enough to make playing fighting games online practically viable.

Given that fighting games are practically worthless as single player experiences, this was what companies tried to keep the genre going.

Came here to say this.

Dreamcast unironically has one of my favorite d-pads of all time. It's small and tight but has a good pivot rock, I could do double half circles and orochinagi motions on it easier than anything else.

Aside from the 360 one which is nonsensically bad, my most hated d-pads by far are the ones on Sony controllers. They work decently for most things, but after an hour of fighting games it feels like the skin on my thumb is going to just tear right off.

That is exactly the intention with moves like this. Doing them in training is one thing, doing them correctly at the exact moment it's important consistently is something else. Spinning piledrivers aren't supposed to be easy, if you could hit a single button to activate it it. It's power as a move takes thar into account. If Zangief just executed it every time you hit light kick it would throw the balance put of whack. The whole point is that someone who can pull it off at a moment's notice to turn the tide of a match will win making a marker of a very skilled player. The people who understand this get it intuitively because most games and sports are like that. The ones who don't mostly never will and they are the reason participation awards exist to coddle the weak and lazy to shut them up for a while.

This guy does have a point. Sticks are technically slightly better, but the difference is small. Doing regular DPs and QCF motions it's not that much, but with things like 360s, double half circles, orochinagi motions or pretzels it gets more pronounced.

That said, muscle memory takes a long time to build and depending how you learned it can be not worth switching. I've been into fighters since pretty much the beginning but I was never a big arcade goer so it was almost all console play.

Then around when SF4 was big I decided to switch and got a hori, and while I did notice a difference once I got over the learning curve, I never quite liked it as much and eventually went back to pad and never had trouble competing.

I'm 47 now and still do well at most things. For me it's mostly practice, I'm rusty at fighters these days cause I play them maybe once a month now where I used to play them daily. But Injustice wasn't that long ago and I was in the top 10% of online players even at my age.

Mostly my tastes have remained pretty similar, fighting games for example have been a favorite this whole time, even though whether I'm playing one at a given time can change. Others like RPGs I used to love but burnt out on by around the mid 00's and only very rarely play. But strategy games like Civ I seem to enjoy more.

KoF and absolutely yes. FF is also great, but it's on the level of SF. KoF is a step above both.

I don't love RE4 but even as lackluster as it is it's loads better than freaking Golden Sun. But whatever, your tastes are yours.

Can't be bothered to make a chart so

King of Fighters 98
Monster Hunter
Tribes 2
Bangai-O
Ecco the Dolphin
Powder
Tempest X
Gaiares
Animal Crossing

I've never even posted on Reddit nor will I. If you don't want to get called out for being stupid bigoted garbage then don't say stupid bigoted shit. We're here to talk about old games, not listen to you whine.

This by the way highlights what happens in these threads and why the same weak arguments are dragged out over and over.

They know they're wrong. PC games logically follow the same rules as everything else. But since they were always console focused their anti PC bias comes out and the whole purpose is to derail actual conversation. This is what /vr/ has devolved into.

I don't like much story in games personally and am not a fan of MGS in any way but I'd still more often rather play it over Gradius given the option.

Chang, Choi, Kim is a brutal team in 98 if you're on your game and can use all three to their potential. Chang is such a beast that if you get going he'll just steamroll. Choi is one if the most erratic crazy little fuckers in any game and you can avoid all sorts of shit and get tons of cheap hits in. Then congrats, if you manage to make it through Chang and Choi, Kim is chilling on the sidelines who is possibly the best non-boss character in the whole game to kick you into submission.

Because they're very complex games and you often can't predict what kinds of things players will discover when they start really drilling down (ftg players can be crazy obsessive) so it's incredibly hard to have a diverse roster of play styles abd actually balance them each perfectly.

Most people think I'm crazy but DC has my favorite d-pad of all time for fighting games. It's so small but pivots in a real nice way. I can do 360's, half circles and orochinagis on it faster and easier than anything else.

I think that the sprites don't look anything like traditional SNK is one of the problems too. They're high definition with lots of animation but the designs look like shit.

This is an interesting take, back then I found SF2 technically proficient but boring. Alpha and SF3 were cool but I think that was mostly just graphics (3 moreso) and more interesting characters but I didn't playit much because KoF was king to me at the time. I spent the most time with 4 which felt like expanded 2 to me, proficient but boring.
