This game was so ahead of the time. It had a lot of great details that blew my mind as a kid, and as far as I know there wasn't any other game like this back then. For example, you can shoot a gun out of the enemy's hands, and if you grab it he'll raise his hands or bring out a pistol and try to shoot you again. If you shoot them in the legs they'll walk slower while holding the damaged leg. And I like how enemies have actual death animations, while PC games back then had glitchy shitty ragdoll and instant deaths, I liked to watch the enemies suffer and die slowly.

There are also a ton of great gadgets long before any other game had them (see Splinter Cell or Metroid Prime), such as the flying cameras and various visors to see in the dark or through walls.

And then there's all the cool weapons and crazy level variety, and a cheesy but enjoyable story.

Such a great game, if they made this for PC people would still play it today as it would be one of the best shooters ever made, but they were held back by the shitty N64.

ITT: multiplayer memories

I spent an ungodly amount of time playing Perfect Dark with friends while growing up. We would fuck around with the bot settings to always keep things interesting. One of my favorites was setting up the game with me and my friend versus a full bot team and making the bots all unarmed. we would camp out in different areas of the maps and try to hold out against the swarm of bots. it was our own version of a zombie apocalypse tower defense. once the bots broke through, you'd get the shit slapped out of you until you died. good times.

For an FPS I'd say Perfect Dark on Perfect Agent mode for N64.
One of the best FPS games of its time and the difficulty actually adds objectives and improves AI as compared to take more damage do less damage.

Perfect Dark.
>The different difficulties actually changed missions rather than just modifying health and damage
>You can shoot guns out of peoples hands
>Some people pull out more guns, run, or simply surrender at that point
>Very good, original weapons that all have a secondary mode
>Wide variety of simulants to play against
>Wide variety of levels and game modes
>Appropriately challenging target tests and challenges

I could go on and on...

Perfect Dark for me without question. Sucks that the 64 version is supposedly the only good one of the series.
OoT comes close, and then Super Smash Bros. after that.

can we talk about games that aren't as fun/haven't aged well?

As much as it pains me to say, pic related. This game makes me appreciate Halo more for what it did for console shooters. Has anybody played the harder difficulty modes? Is auto aim gone? If it is, I can't even imagine trying to aim with the R button.

Although not technically retro, I bought the ICO collection and after trying to beat the second colossi I quit. I thought the controls were quite bad.

In 2003 my local Toys R' US was liquidating their N64, E-Reader and crappy PS1 games.

Being at the time, an enterprising 13 year old, I picked up 2 sealed copies of Perfect Dark for $1.99 each, and several packs of E-Reader cards sealed in blister packs for $.49, with the intent of holding onto them.

Ten years later, I don't think that the E-Readers are worth anything yet, but the sealed Perfect Darks are worth $25-$30, per copies recently sold on eBay.

What do you think the peak is for N64 sealed stuff?? Will it reach the ceiling of older sealed stuff, or is the market too saturated?

I'm lacking a good FPS on 64 and I want to remedy the situation. All sources point me towards this, and I just wanted to get one final opinion before I pull the trigger, How's the single player? Some input on the multi-player as well would be nice too.

I've got a couple spare bucks. Should I pick up Perfect Dark or Jet Force Gamini first?

So, I'm playing Perfect Dark on an emulator - Project64 - with WASD and mouse support. It took some configuration, both in-game and out, but I got it working.

I'm also giving a serious attempt to playing Perfect Agent, the hardest difficulty, for the first time. When I first played this as a kid it was just unfeasible.

I just wanted to say that it's really intense. Playing on Perfect Agent is nothing like playing on the "normal" difficulty. No shields, health packs OR regerating health OR checkpoints means the stakes are extremely high, and one or two screw-ups puts you back at the start of a ten to twenty minute mission.

This results in a lot of frustration, having to replay missions on average like five times, but it also results in some pretty serious adrenaline towards the end of completing one.

So /vr/troopers, I guess my point is, if you haven't tried a Perfect Agent run, you should. And WASD + mouse PD is a little weird, but you get used to it.

Also, Perfect Dark thread.
