By the way to anyone who likes the idea of Ecco but just wants to explore on your own or make it a little easier and not have to deal with the breath meter, all versions of the game have a debug menu that you can use to either make yourself invulnerable, give infinite air, teleport within the level and play around with the music tempo if you like.

Another cool thing about the music in the Genesis version is that Ecco has a debug menu which lets you do a few cool things like teleport within the level or be invincible but also you can change the music tempo and get some really neat effects.

All versions of the game have a robust debug menu you can use if you feel like it. I don't think you can skip the machine entirely with it because the original game counts it all as one level, but you can teteport to the end location and get right to her if you want. But really, if you're cheating to beat a game what's the point in the first place? If you want to see an ending, youtube exists. Unless you find the challenge engaging no one will ever care if you suffered through the tedium.

There are several good ports. My personal favorite way to play is the M2 3D one on the 3ds. They did a phenomenal job and even fish in a given school are at different depths. I have played it emulated many times though with no issue.

I do recommend a guide if you feel stuck, there are two quests near the beginning where you rescue lost dolphins and those give you very useful abilities for the rest of the game.

Finally though, if you find yourself very stuck or the game is too hard, or you just want to play it more casually, all versions including the GBA port have the debug code which is quite robust.

You can yourself invulnerable if you want, level select or teleport to any area of the current zone. Almost more fun though is you can change the music tempo which given Ecco's incredible soundtrack makes for some really cool variations you can do.

Ecco really does have one of the best cheat menus of all time. I spent so much time messing around with changing the music tempo.

I wish you could fuck with the music in the CD version the same way you can with the Genesis.
