Same reason a lot of crap hardware is invented and sold at a loss: someone thought they could make money locking customers in.

This thing was contemporary to that, and with such an awful LCD that the CRT would have been a marked improvement. I did have one that I installed linux on and used for IRC in those days. Was a fun little machine, but if it hadn't been sold at a loss, would have been way overpriced for what it was.

Anyway, if it were me, I'd grab that sucker and see what still worked and didn't. Even if only the tube is good, a $100 universal arcade monitor chassis with it would make a good replacement for an arcade machine with a dead/burnt in display.
