OP already said he's not a complete baby and is used to 8-bit RPGs.

Basically, yeah. Mother is full of references to classic sci-fi.

Eh, Mother 1's gameplay is alright, it's not different from Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy on NES. In fact it's better since you can move in 8 directions on the map and stuff.

It's "shit" only if you aren't used to play 8bit RPGs.

I guess I'm glad I got into the Mother series not because of any "retro hipster hype", but because I was a long time fan of Moonriders and Keiichi Suzuki, and I found out he wrote the soundtrack for the Mother games so I decided to check them out. Wasn't expecting anything other than enjoy the soundtrack, and ended up loving the whole package, I played the series in release order.
I didn't found out about the "crazy cult fanbase" until after I played the second game.

This one has a funky, jazzy soundtrack too

In his defense, he's at least admitting that he was doing like everyone else with the herd 5th genner mentality that "Mother 1 is unplayable because ... uh, it's a NES RPG! and it has encounter rates!" and finally broke through his own prejudice.

Yeah OP, it's a pretty good game.

The whole series is just 3 games, play them in order.
I think the series is best enjoyed when played in order. The only exception being people who got to play Mother 2 back in 1995. Nowdays with translated ROMs at your disposal you really have no excuse to play them in other order. The plots don't connect directly, but the main villain in Mother 2 is the same from Mother 1, also, you will feel like going backwards if you play 2 before 1. Enjoy Mother 1 as it is (a great 8 bit RPG) then move onto its 16 bit sequel, it'll feel great and you will actually be familiar with the antagonist. (it will make the iconic final encounter with him a lot more memorable if you know of his backstory from M1)

Sucks that you lost your save though.
