The game has a kind of logic to how it hides things on the map, so when you find some secrets it'll be easy to find more. You can grind for EXP pretty easily, too. Also make sure to stick to the roads when you're low on HP, because even if you get a random encounter on a road tile, there'll be no enemies and you can just walk offscreen.
There are maps which tell you where 1-UPs and fairies are, and when you find a few you'll know where to look. And if you're about to go into a dungeon with no lives left, don't be afraid to die just to set your lives back to 3. When you get more items, it'll be easier to traverse the map starting at the palace.
If you're bad at fighting, try a more defensive style, like other anons said. The shield blocking mechanic in Ocarina of Time is inspired by this game (which is why zoomers complain about how you have to "wait around" all the time), so think of the encounters with Octoroks and other enemies with projectile attacks like you would do in that game, only the bullets can't be deflected back at them so you'll have to find your opportunity to strike.
Don't try to speedrun going to every dungeon as fast as you can just to get to the end. This game wants you to get stronger as you go and take your time a little.
