III is the quintessential japanese RPG.
One of the best in the genre for sure, in my opinion, the best.

What's wrong with the original NA localization for NES?

III on GBC is really cool, and the extra content is worth it.
But IMO, the original NES version looks better and sounds better. In fact I prefer the NES version of DQIII to any other, mostly because of how beautiful that chiptune sounds. GB and SNES soundtracks sound awesome too, but they don't quite make it for me like the original does.

Strange Journey isn't /vr/.
And I guess Zoma remains a memorable hard boss for me. Special mention to Orochi and Baramos.

I don't think DQ has clunky mechanics, they're all very straightforward and that's why the DQ formula hasn't changed to this day.
The thing with the early DQs is the general "8-bit", a lot of people can't really get into pre-SNES RPGs period, I think if you liked the NES FF, then you won't have issues with DQ.
Probably most people will tell you to play the SNES remakes, but I think if you feel like playing the originals, go for it. Even if the remakes are superior and added more content, the originals are still special in their own way, I personally prefer the NES music to the GB or SNES ones.

I like the NES versions, mainly because of the music.
The graphics are also charming, even if they're very simplistic.

Dragon Warrior III NES version was the first DQ I played, a couple years ago, and I loved it.
