Zero Mission is an awesome game. I don't understand how someone who likes Metroid games could not like it. It features good exploration and tight gameplay—a staple for any good Metroid game.

Agreed. Metroid Fusion had the tightest, most responsive gameplay of any Metroid game ever. Although more linear than most Metroid games, its exploration was still superb and on par with the other 2D Metroids.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. Saying that Metroid is unpolished is like saying Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda is unpolished.

Here's my situation. I enjoy the shooting/platforming mechanics in SNES/GBA Metroids a lot, but find the 'bomb-a-random-tile-to-proceed' mechanic off-putting. Still, I played through these games several times already.

What other similar 2D shooters/platformers are out there (preferrably with diagonal shooting)? I played Vectorman/2 a lot back in the day and it's kinda what I'm looking for, but I wish there were more weapons/upgrades.

Straight-up shooters like Gunstar Heroes/Alien Soldier/Contra where you simply proceed in a single direction while shooting tons of enemies are a no-no. There has to be some platforming/exploration in addition to the shooting.
