I've been to all of these place and the pastebin is accurate. There's one more good place not mentioned

>University Electronics Repair Workshop

Every big building in a University that does any kind of research has a repair shop in the basement. If you are a student there you may go ask politely if they have any old monitors they would want to surplus or donate to your "experiments" at home. Like the guide says, don't go too far into the video game side. Just say you need a particular monitor with certain characteristics. Most of these places have a backroom filled with old computers and monitors dating back to the 80s. If you are very lucky they may give you a CGA monitor.

Know what you are looking in these places. You are not likely to find a PVM. You -are- likely to find a white or beige workstation monitor that supports 15-38khz scan range. It will look like any old PC monitor, but it is actually a tri-sync arcade monitor for our purposes. There are a great many other kinds of workstation monitors out there, some that can do very high resolutions. It's up to you what you want.

pic also related. These massive 21" Sun monitors are just as great as any old PVM/BVM monitor in their own ways. I wish I could find one again.
