I guess though also that I make the effort to work my movement into my aiming as well, mainly when I'm actually on the move, where I'll sometimes adjust my movement trajectory (when viable), together with my aiming with the mouse, as to better line up shots.
I'm also that kind of freak with plays with this kind of setup (not my picture, I use a different mouse). This product is a "FragChuck" or "SplitFish", at a glance it looks like a wagglan implement, but there's no motion controls in it. What it does is give me the left half of a wireless controller, with buttons and analog sticks.

I sought out this kind of thing back when I was maybe, 25 or something, where I had played some FPS on console for a while, and then went back to some good old Dooming on PC. I noticed that while it was nice to have a mouse to aim with again, I just really didn't find WASD very comfortable, that I missed the variable and, well, analog input of a stick.
I think to myself, is there a a way to combine this, get the best of both worlds, the smoothness and fine precision of moving with an analog stick, and the speed and fine precision of aiming and looking with a mouse? Turns out that there sorta is. Playing with it for a while, it's awkward to combine these two things at first, there's some getting used to for a few days, some tuning with sensitivity and working out the best binds, but I get increasingly into it and more comfortable. Running on a single AA battery, it lasts a surprisingly long time, too, about a month of daily gaming.

Don't need to be a world renowned pro to be decent at games, don't need to strive to the highest challenges you can imagine, just don't let yourself get all dull.

Again, I think a lot of it is just subjective, and I think there's room to adapt which some people don't realize. I've largely moved away from using keyboard and mouse for FPS because I don't find WASD comfortable for movement anymore, it's not ergonomic.

Like hell I'm giving up mouselook if I have the option though, so gamepad + mouse it is, for whatever game that lets me. Not all games do, and I can still play well enough with WASD, but going through Return To Castle Wolfenstein earlier this year, my left hand was somewhat strained by the experience.

It'll depend on your game/sourceport. GzDoom supports it, as does QuakeSpasm and Half-Life 2, and it's quite comfortable, as I don't really enjoy WASD these days. I can still play WASD, but it strains my fingers over time. I think that anything which supports typical USB gamepads with analog stick input can be made to work. There's a very certain smoothness when pairing analog stick movement with full mouse freelook, odd at first, but once I got used to it I absolutely loved it. I typically have Always Run on, and then adjust speed accordingly with the analog input when necessary, I bind crouch toggle to clicking down on the analog, as I didn't like any other approach.

There's a few one-handed gamepad peripherals made for the purpose. I use a Splitfish brand one, and it's ok, good analog stick, very slightly mushy (though ok and clear 'breaking') buttons, but an awful D-Pad which I thankfully do not have to use often. I wish it was better, but as it is, it's quite decent, runs on a single AA battery for quite a long time.
Too lazy to take a picture, so look at this one I swiped from Google.
You could probably just use just whatever gamepad though, as long as you don't mind the weight hanging to the right.

I don't know about that first one, but the second one doesn't require any kind of special mouse or anything, you just plug in the wireless receiver into your PC (or console, for the console versions), and then pair the gamepad to the receiver, as explained in the manual. On rare occasions, you may find that you need to re-couple the gamepad to the receiver, in which case you may want to consult the manual for the console versions and follow those steps instead (for some reason), so get the .pdf's for both versions, just in case.
Have only had that happen twice in 8 years.

Beyond that, the analog stick I think is quite comfortable and good in precision, can be clicked like on most console controllers, the shoulder buttons are a bit mushy, but they have a short travel and a break to them, so they're ok, you also get three of them. The two face buttons are alright. The D-Pad however is very bad, it's the kind where it's mushy and really easy to accidentally input diagonal upwards when trying to press upwards, etc.
It has a very good battery life, one AA battery lasts for quite a long time. For games which don't support gamepad input (or modern gamepad input), the receiver can be set to a keyboard mode, where the analog stick is translated to WASD, but I don't think that this is a useful feature.

I've tried it with GzDoom, Quakespasm, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Counter-Strike to name some, and it works well. I use these binds (where applicable), I don't have Splitfish's own mouse, and you can use whichever for PC:
>Mouse 1 - Fire
>Mouse 2 - Jump
>Mouse 3 - Zoom/Aim
>Mouse 4 - Reload
>Mouse 5 - Alt-Fire
>Scroll - Weapons

>Shoulder F - Quick Melee
>Shoulder 1 - Flashlight (I rest my finger on this one for safety)
>Shoulder 2 - Quick Grenade
>Upper Face Button - Map (for Doom, basically)
>Lower Face Button - Use/Interact
>Analog Stick Click - Crouch Toggle (manual is too awkward with this input)
>D-Pad - Inventory Functions (rarely applied, thankfully)

>Why isn't it default set up to pad?
Because most people don't play GzDoom with a gamepad. It's easy to set up if you want to though, so I don't see the big complaint, the fact that GzDoom has a shitty linear filter on by default I think is a far greater sin.

>I can't play doom on a fucking mouse and keyboard in 2021.
Then don't.

>Yes I play on pad and so do many others who grew up on console Doom. M+K is for grandpas who can't adapt.
Consider ascending to Gamepad + Mouse, kid. The smoothness, variability, and precision of an analog stick, the ergonomics of a gamepad, and the freedom, speed, and precision, of the almighty mouse.

You don't even need a gimmick gadget like I use, just use the left side of any gamepad you like which has a good analog stick.
