But prerendered backgrounds were the trend. Also not like they had a choice when it was nearly impossible to make good 3D graphics

Shame because the characters had great graphics (for the time) in-battle and in FMV scenes, but the way that all the characters and NPCs were blocky piles of crap during in map/towns was just fugly. It looks even worse against some of the nice environmental backgrounds. Makes me wonder why Square did that.
