Honestly, I don't recall how they called it back then. I only remember my disappointment when they changed era.

This is a good >>10073108 outline, but I would add that except for Resident Evil lifting an almost EXACT carbon copy of the overall framework of the Alone in the Dark core gameplay in terms of controls and presentation, there's basically no "survival horror" aspect to the latter; the structure, approach and general logic is modeled after point-and-click adventure games, down to the fact that you can save your progress anywhere at any time.

I know people familiar with RE will be quick to point out there's not that much resource scarcity in it to really call the game "survival", but the contrast for a novice player between that game and AitD in terms of general experience is pretty notable if you're not willing to ignore it.

Anyway I had no idea a remake was in development; can't say I'm particularly excited but yeah it's odd it has taken this long for such a project to pop up. I assume a lot of new players will be rushing to play the original now in order to validate their pre-existing opinion that it's better lol

Summer is considered spooky time for Japan right? Challenging one of the 3DO horror games might work. Wolfenstein 3D on the 3DO is a solid port, and would work for a FPS game. How long to beat though?

I enjoyed the first Alone in the Dark.

Dogshit game. It wasn't even designed as a Clock Tower game, they just added the franchise later.

Boring, slow gameplay. Too jap-ish to be interesting or frightening.

AitD was released one year prior to Legacy.

It doesn't feel like an Alone in the Dark game at all. It's terribly generic with muh strange child, muh weird cult, muh endless dialogues. The gameplay looks like RE4, for god's sake.
I just want pic related :(

Why didn't they port Alone In The Dark to the Super NES when the Super FX (or Super FX 2) chip made such a thing possible?

Resident Evil gets lots of flak for basically lifting its whole gameplay framework from AitD, but honestly it managed to make a proper game out of what was basically just a very revolutionary proof-of-concept.

AitD is enjoyable enough but basically as a "comfy" game, which is altogether the wrong impression for a supposed horror game to make. It borrows mostly from point-and-click adventure game design philosophy, which generally amounts to bite-sized trial and error scenarios. The fact that the specific and obtuse structure of those games forces a requirement to let the player save anywhere defuses most of the "horror" component. A proper horror game builds up an overarching sense of tension and dread with carefully placed moments of respite. This game is mostly ALL respite.

Not really, the game has unlimited saves for a reason. It's just mostly trial and error.

Literally copying a successful and revolutionary existing game as a template

Could Alone in the Dark have been ported to the Super Nintendo using SuperFX chip without any slowdown or technical compromises? It seems low-poly enough that it could have been done.
