Too much tvtropes up in this thread.

Games, especially adventure games were fucking hard back in the day.

I guess the answer OP is looking for is Monkey's Island, Grim Fandango and Sam and Max... which were brilliant games but entry level for the adventure game genre.

I personally enjoyed A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... I may be pleb tier, but the remake makes the game funner than the text version, and it even has an "easy" mode for pussies.
