That's the Famicom version's boxart. Here's a clean version of the artwork.

Return of Double Dragon, like many SNES/SFC games, uses a compression method to store its graphics. If you load the ROM image on a program like Tile Viewer, you will only get the OBJ sprites for the player and enemy characters.

A few unused graphic assets have been found through save states hacking, such as character portraits and backgrounds, but nothing of Marian yet. I', really tempted to write a graphic decompressor for the game if I knew how.

The most common criticisms I've seen for DD1NES was the fact it's 1P only (well 2P alternating, but who the fuck plays alternating modes in this day and age) and you're forced to level grind for your moves. It also had platforming sessions, but the jump controls weren't as ridiculously strict as DD2NES.

They're completely different games. The NES version is more of an adaptation than a port, while the SMS version tries to be as close to the arcade it can, but it's pretty gimped overall. Neither are particular great. The arcade version is the way to go.

>and you forgot to rank DDIV
There is no Double Dragon IV, unless you meant Super/Return, which I did.>>2741642

Double Dragon has always been Hokuto no Ken-inspired in its aesthetics. Especially when it came to their promotional art.

>"no", you probably just don't understand how to play it.
Assumptions much? I didn't think DD3 on the NES was as good as the first two games. I can clear it without much trouble though since all you need is the Cyclone Spin Kick anyway.

I only left out the Genesis versions as far as major ones are concerned and those were just straight ports of the arcade games. None of them were good though, except for DD1 maybe. I don't particular care enough about the 80s home computers ports that were designed to be played with one button joystick.

Other than having 2-player co-op, the SMS version of DD1 wasn't as good as the NES version due to how they messed the combat mechanics in that version. Combos don't work the same way and the way the jump kicks worked was kinda weird. You can't even grab enemies in the SMS version unless they're near death.

Yeah. I forgot about that one too. I like the art style, but could never get into the touch screen controls.

He'll definitely be playing the Famicom version. I don't think Arino has ever been assigned to play arcade versions and the other two home versions released in Japan (Mark III and Game Boy) were not very mainstream.

And here's the cover art for the Famicom version.
