I heard the guy is a native Japanese speaker. Is that a larp? He's banking on that idea because "lol DQ wasn't respected outside Japland and I can save it"? Is that what's going on here?

If they refuse to credit the original staff who made a remake possible in the first place, I will think twice about my purchase.

There is no other "translation" right now, just some kid injecting things he heard was in the Japanese version and making half the shit up to fill in the blanks.
>>9825506
The hell, I thought "Chrono Trigger" was the working title for Secret of Mana when it was CD-based. Or was that bad translation?

The problem with this quote is that no one can source it properly, which Mato even says right there when he went out of his way to buy the issue of the magazine it's supposedly from. The quote originated from 2ch and is potentially a hoax because the Jap side of the Internet isn't as good at keeping track of these things as you'd think (it's why Kirby fans JUST RECENTLY discovered Shinichi Shimomura's face after years despite a major JP wiki contributor owning the same book).
Anyways >>9031430 I have two theories.
A) If the aforementioned quote is fake, then not much really came of FC IV. Likely some of the staff moved on to finish what'd become IV, and if anything survived, it was reincorporated into the new V.
B) If the aforementioned quote is real, then if Chrono Cross became Final Fantasy Dimensions II, maybe it became the first Final Fantasy Dimensions? Square was also known for reusing discarded bits and pieces into other projects (example, Secret of Mana's battle system was the initial idea for IV and its working title was "Chrono Trigger" before getting the Seiken Densetsu name that originated from a canned Disk System game; the leftover bits of the CD version and the SNES plans for VII were then repuporsed for the actual Chrono Trigger, etc. all very incestual).
I would like to believe scenario B, but A seems more probable; "V" was even planned to be released before it all along, suggesting it probably didn't get too far in development.

Yeah, well. That shouldn't even BE an issue in the first place. I'd rather not have to constantly worry if a game can overheat my computer any minute too, esp. considering there's an alternative that plays basically the same

>So general consensus seems to be the GBA ports might have nice new features but the meat of the game is a downgrade? I'll stick with the snes games then, thanks anons
More or less. The audio/visual disparity is real, and hacks that aim to fix this are mostly memes that only do so much against real hardware speakers and screencrunch. There are SOME things worth checking out. A Link to the Past/Four Swords is almost the gold standard if you get past Young Link voice, though since you're homebrewing a New 3DS, you may be better emulating the original and getting Four Swords Anniversary Edition for the other game. The only thing you'd really miss out on is the actually pretty good bonus dungeon. Super Mario Advance is fairly skippable; 1's egg quest is aped from BS Super Mario USA's trophies, 2 is only if you want a slightly different Luigi, and 3's Secret levels really aren't worth it as it was substantially better with the Super FX. The only one you may want to check out if 4, if you add all the e-Reader content back in. World-e levels were restored cardless in the Wii U release, and they're honestly better than most NSMB levels. DKC can all be skipped on GBA, but 3 is noteworthy as others have said. I personally don't like the music for having subpar looping with stretches of awkward ambience and ruining final boss, but the extra world has some decent levels. Just pick up a save at Zophar's Domain or something if you're curious, just note that the new boss was swapped to another world and it sucks. Final Fantasy was all better on SNES; IV is based on the hilaribad WonderSwan version (a stark contrast to I&II having one of the best versions on WonderSwan), V has a GBA Script Port that takes away the main draw for anyone who grew up with that version, and VI is obsolete due to T-Edition having nearly all the same content and then some.
Bottom Line: Play the originals first, then maybe consider checking out the ports later if you're curious about the changes.

>The bonus content in the PSP versions is challenging, it's the main story that gets butchered.
It's not even all that challenging (Labyrinth of Time maybe being the exception since it's designed for postgame and actually mixes up the gameplay) - once you get get over the novelty of the characters in Soul of Rebirth and get them up to speed, you'll realize it's just a rearranged version of the original endgame with a completely nonsensical story whose bright idea was it to split the Emperor into two and the Arcane Labyrinth and Soul of Chaos dungeons give you completely gamebreaking rewards, and they did the latter's nostalgiabait bosses better in The After Years of all things where they're somewhat relevant to the plot (though 3D remake removed them due to model laziness). The closest the bonus content gets to being interesting is the party-switching in FFIV and seeing Enuo in FFV, other than that they're all a wash that feel like they were made by Square's Z-team.
As mentioned earlier by other anons in the thread, even the Pixel Remaster has so many changes under the hood that you really ought to keep an eye out for restoration mods at >>8055116 - if for some reason you only play vanilla, the objectively best versions that fix enough bugs while least bastardizing the playing experience are still the Wonderswan Color versions (with PlayStation as a close second), though FFIII might still be best as the Pixel Remaster on virtue of having no other good remake that addresses the endgame grind that was infamous even back in the day.
>>8078828
Oh you've gotta be kidding me. The worst part is that these come out in little over a week, so there should be no tolerance for these issues. How is Square rushing decades-old RPGs?
Looks like Final Fantasy III will be the only worthwhile remake after all. What an utter waste of potential. At least mobile V&VI are getting wiped out of existence outside of some pretty dedicated preservationists.

This. The remake actually restores some of the dialog lost due to space constraints in the Woolsey version, but it doesn't do nearly enough of what fans were expecting.
