I think if you already have one of these kinds of systems, it's valid to say "it's good enough for my needs". But it's dumb to go out of your way to buy one for the sake of being your pocket emu.

DSi can't really go beyond NES and GB before it struggles, the PSP can do SNES at the cost of heavy audio bugs and PS1 at the cost of no L2/R2, and while 3DS is great if you're only interested in the Nintendo handheld library, even official SNES releases on that thing struggle to run at 100% sometimes. Pic related would get it chugging for me at times.

The truth of the matter is, these handhelds are all old and used, and while it's true you risk getting "chinked", I think you're equally at risk of just getting old, worn-out hardware going the first-party route. At least if you go through reputable means to find a modern retro handheld, you can trust that what you're getting is fairly new, and you'll have some level of customer support.
