It's not (completely) due to Unity. It's indie "developers" not having a clue and Unity making it too easy.
They were forced to fix it in the Switch port, it initially ran at 20fps but they achieved 60 in the end. But that was years after it was released, and they didn't backport the improvements to the PC version.
A few days ago I tried an indieshit unity game (kingdom of the dead? or something) and it ran at about 50fps. I used a graphics profiler out of curiosity, the turd was doing over 50K drawcalls (this is well over 10 times more than the most extreme scenes in eternal or cyberpunk). Why? It was drawing projected shadows for over 100 light sources all over the level, none of which was even visible.
Most indie developers should be shot. Thanks for attending my ted talk.
