Honestly everyone is pretty fucking good. Personally I think the hero, alena, ragnar, and nara/meena are the absolute best party possible but no one is anywhere near useless. I always just switch around and try to give everyone equal time in my party.

Word of advice if you're on the NES version, DO NOT bring cristo/kiryl with you for bosses. His AI is dumb as fuck for bosses and constantly tries to cast beat/thwack. While its pretty funny seeing him refuse to heal party members in order to cast beat and having everyone die isn't funny.

Are you kidding? Ragnar is probably one of the most consistently reliable characters in most of the game. High damage and barely have to worry about restoring his health. With the metal babble sword he is a monster.

III on sfc or IV and V on DS are great. Get the Japanese version of IV and V though as the English translation are not the best
