Why do people hail Super Metroid as the greatest game ever when Metroid 1 is clearly superior in almost every way?

Metroid 1 is actually challenging as opposed to SM which is disappointingly easy. The exploration part in M1 is much more central than in SM as you don't have an in-game map, but must draw your own. (Or you can patch in a minimap, if you must.) The music is much better and more suiting in M1 than in SM too.

The only thing better in SM is that you can save instead of entering a long-ass password, and that you don't start with almost no health every time you play. (And this can be fixed with a fanpatch.)

Aw man that would be so fucking hardcore for real gamers! With a full specced sound chip function? Tyte! We'll open the thing up and inside we'll find 30 ROM chips with the original games reproduced bit-for-bit on them plus all the necessary mappers so we know for sure that every single fucking function call has exactly the same quadrillasecond timing as on the original hardware and they'll only make like 10,000 of them so truly dedicated gamers like myself who have already made a reservation at Gamestop will ever EVER have one. I have such a huge boner right now omg

So I decided to try and get in to the Metroid series, so I thought I may as well start with the first one. This game sucks, plain and simple. Perhaps my biggest problems with the game is that it has the same rooms copypasted a ridiculous amounts of time and that enemies a shit ton of damage compared to the amount that you can get back from health pickups, even if you die the game brings you back with only 30 energy which is nothing so you have to grind enemies for energy just to get through some of the areas.

Should I just skip this and play Super Metroid instead? I've heard that's supposedly the best one.

Metroid 1.
Once you calm down about how nonsensical and confusing it seems at first and you start really focusing on it, putting thought into it, and getting good, you start to notice that a surprising amount of thought was actually put into many aspects of the game. It still has a bit of that feel of "these guys were kind of new to designing video games," but I've never seen anyone do a better job of giving the player freedom in a sidescroller.
One of the things I really like is Kraid. They just threw a hard boss in and left it up to the player to figure out how to kill it. I've never seen anything indicating that there was any specific way that the developers intended the battle to be fought and as a result of that and the flexible game mechanics, different people ended up coming up with a bunch of their own ways of doing it, all kind of weird and silly.
The game is full of ways of doing things like that, that the developers obviously didn't think of, but which generally don't downright break the game or make it feel like you're cheating. They gave you a world, some game mechanics to use in that world, no clear direction, and said "get it done however you can."
Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed by the remake.

I love the first Metroid. I played it for the first time in 2011 and I was surprised how playable it was. It has easily the best music of all the games. It was a bit weird at first I thought that there was no map, but I quickly found the fun in drawing my own map; it added to the exploring part of the game even further.

My only big problem with it is how you have to start each session with filling up your HP. It is tedious and makes you sort of not bothering to start playing, but when that's over then it's all fun (till you die of course, then you have to go all over again).

I also liked the difficulty. I played Super Metroid for the first time this year and was a bit disappointed how easy it was. I cleared every boss on the first try.

All in all, Metroid 1 is really great game, easily one of the best on the NES.

>Greatest game of all time. And I don't say that lightly.

People often say this is better than Metroid 1, but I don't get quite why.

Metroid is one of the greatest games of all-time. Whenever you play it, it's like playing a piece of gaming history. With any game, I still recommend you test it first before buying if you can, though.

Some people argue Metroid didn't age so well. I think Metroid aged as well as The Legend of Zelda did. New versions of Zelda came along that were arguably superior, but the original remained a classic masterpiece, and so does Metroid.

Metroid was way ahead of its time. The music that featured space silence parts, tight gameplay, and one of the most shocking plot twists ever in a video game. Say what you want about Metroid, but it's classic, and one of the best NES games ever.

Just started playing this gem, can't believe it took me so long. I grew up with Super Metroid and finally decided to play the whole series.

What should I expect?

Just got the screw attack, heading towards the varia suit next.

Is it worth grabbing a copy of the original NES Metroid for collection's sake, or just stick with Metroid Zero Mission and the unlockable original?

Metroid is fairly hard. And the exploring bit gets amplified with you having no map, so you have to draw one yourself. I really enjoyed that game, and I played it for the first time two years ago, so no nostalgiagoogles here.

Hey /vr/, i've just made this thread on /v/ but it quickly turned hostile, something about me being a spoonfed pleb or some shit.

I just wanted some discussion about 'Metroidvania ' games and what should i be playing as i'm very late to the whole open-ended 2d adventure scene.

So, there it is, hope this fares better in /vr/.

I have never played a video game so filled with fucking bullshit.

I can understand adding secret areas to the game housing extra power-ups. But just about EVERYTHING of importance in this game is hidden behind an invisible door. In order to find anything you need to spend hours morph-ball bombing every single fucking floor. I can't imagine how anyone beat this game before the invention of the internet.
