I've never really checked out the romhacking scene and I'd like to learn more about it, what are some of the best and most famous ones to try?

Not just romhacks, translations and patches also. Are there any big projects underway?

Talk about your favorites here, I'm planning to try playing some.

While I won't pretend that it's the pinnacle of gaming or chastise anyone for not feeling the same, A Link to the Past is my all time favorite game, and it has my all time favorite ROM hack too, Parallel Worlds. It has some bullshit parts here and there that everyone likes to focus on, but overall it's a phenomenal experience. Playing it without a walkthrough and making maps of some of the caves and dungeons (especially the dungeon with all the warps - you know the one if you've played it) along the way made me feel like a kid again.

Don't play Parallel Worlds Remodel though, it's total garbage.
