The Reckoning (Xatrix) feels like more of the same, minus those annoying laser grunts. Otherwise I don't think it adds much to the Quake 2 experience. I suppose if you liked Q2, Reckoning is basically more.
Ground Zero (Rogue) on the other hand, holy fucking shit it's a mixed bag. On one hand, it adds actual unique setpieces to Q2 that it was dearly missing, and resores the missing AI functions that was removed from the original retail release. On the other hand, it places turrets behind you more often than not, pacing the game to a crawl. I'd recommend playing this only if they'res a way to remove/nullify the turrets, otherwise it's an extremely frustrating experience.

Regardless if you play the expansions or not, the additions to the soundtrack are fucking killer and are absolutely worth a listen to. https://youtu.be/oOhVcUkpcjo

I really like how the series themes converge in Quake 3/Live with the environment design. There's a great mix of gothic+tech themes going on some maps which you don't see too often in games (only Strife, Unreal Tournament and Warhammer 40k comes to mind).

Spoilered aren't retro for this board:
Q3 > CPMA > Q1 > Blood > Dusk > Doom > Urban Terror > Q2 > PainKiller > The Specialists > Amid Evil > Grounded & Techless FPS Trash.

Blood's up there for how smooth it feels to move around in spite of keyboard movement.
Amid Evil is low for how disgustingly floaty it feels.
There's probably other shit out there like certain Quake Champion characters (crouchsliding!) but I don't want to blogpost.

Honestly, give me some form of bhopping and I'm a happy man.

Adding to that, I played Quake 1.5 when it was in beta and I didn't like it, but that's probably the second-most well known Q1 mod outside of AD.
Also there's Slayer's Testament, which is still a WIP, but it's worth playing to see what's possible with just QuakeSpasm.

There's technically Wrath on the DarkPlaces engine, but that hasn't been fully released yet and is lacking content for the time being. If we're also going to include the non-retro games then I'd say Dusk is probably Quake's spiritual successor. Painkiller's also decent but it's map design is lacking compared to it.

If you're willing to play some Doom mods you could also play Dimensions of the Boomed with ZMovement and a Quake weapon pack (I think Samsara might work with in 4.4.2 but haven't tried it). They'res also Descent into Heresy that uses Quake weapons in Heretic and optionally lets you brown-up all the maps.
