Yeah, 2000/XP are very similar, so using 2000 grants you zero advantages over XP with regards to application compatibility. However, 2000 is more "retro" and it may run better than XP without tweaks on older hardware like my Pentium II laptop. There are some XP/2000 games that won't run on Vista/7/8 but they are fairly rare. Most 32-bit /vr/ Windows games will still work on 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8. Even 16-bit Windows 3.x games still run on 32-bit Windows 8.1. The main reason for using 95/98 as a retro gaming machine is for playing DOS games alongside Windows games. 98 is generally the best for this purpose. If you really want a compability challenge try Windows NT 4. I even got some Unreal Engine games to run on NT 3.51 (but in a VM).
