It's not cope. The Sonic 3 barrel is accidentally a great study in human psychology.

>You're talking about different barrels. So what? You jump on this one and it doesn't work.

These two posts perfectly sum up the issue. Let's put smart and dumb aside and talk instead about attentiveness and inattentiveness.

There's a parable called The Bee and the Fly. The bee knows where it wants to go. It's aware of it's location and the location of it's hive. It can get from point A to point B with perfect efficiency. The bee is "smart." The bee is "attentive." A fly, meanwhile, doesn't give a fuck. It just goes ham. No goals. No destination. The fly is "dumb." The fly is "inattentive." If you trap the bee behind a slightly open window it will always try to get to it's hive the same way and thus fail and die. The fly, meanwhile, in the same situation will just be banging against the glass at random and will eventually find the gap by happenstance and escape.

Attentiveness relies on consistency and pattern recognition. If you change the pattern on attentive people and they don't notice the change they'll get stuck. Inattentiveness thrives in chaos. Inattentive people aren't tripped up by patterns because they don't register there even is a pattern in the first place.

Attentive people get to the barrel and use their previously gained knowledge to get past it. To them it doesn't look like a puzzle at all. They "know" the solution is to jump because that's how the earlier ones worked. And since it just baaaarely misses it looks like a pure skill issue. They think they ran into a huge difficulty spike and just need to git guud and find the right cadence.
