From my memory, the reason D1 didn't become a mindless endgame loot grind is because of item dupes.
Everyone already had the elixers and Godly Plate of the Whale, etc. Fucking Staff of Apocalypse.
We didn't kill Diablo for loot at all. It was just fun to do.
