Well that depends. What genre are we looking for because there are quite a few my friend. I find survival horror games tend to do well by this. Maybe it's just a Sarah Conner or Ellen Ripley thing but Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield from Resident Evil and Regina from Dino Crisis are all great example. Id even go so far as to recommend the Fear Effect games, which while filled with loads of sex appeal will typically have the ladies in much more assertive positions or provide plot context for it. Metroid is perhaps the Ur example for adventure games and RPGs have Phantasy Star's Alis Landale. You'd also be surprised how often the pilot of the shmup ships are ladies, MUSHA and Pulstar spring to mind immediately in that regard. And if we BROADen our criteria of protagonist to include people outside the central her we have any number of fighting games and rpgs who feature ladies as prominent playable characters.

Claire A Leon B is the "cannon " but I like the reverse myself. Though Id say play both scenarios for both characters
