the cast of DQ IV but fuck Cristo and his AI

This is a tough one, I like straightforward stories of DQI, III and IV (which IMO are rare examples of "you are the destined hero" trope done right) but I also really like the idea of DQ VI's story. I'm going to go with DQIII's story but DQV supposedly has the best story out of all DQ games and possibly one of the best stories out of all (J)RPGs. I really should get around playing it...

The problem with the accents in DS of DQ4 is that to really know what you are doing or where to go next you have to talk to NPCs. And to make NPCs almost a chore to talk to and read what they are saying really hurts the game. NPCs should be able to give nice easy to read text so you can focus on the adventure.

I usually recommend going chronologically. However, the first two DQ games are pretty hard to get into unless you're way into old-school, grindy NES RPGs.

I recommend starting with Dragon Quest III. I think it's the best in the series. Introduced a class system and it's really well-made all the way through.

III and V are, I think, the best retro games in the series.

IV and VII are also good.

Not retro, but VIII and IX are also fantastic.

Alright, I'm the guy who made the post quoted.
What I meant to say, although I agree now that I re-read it it was kind of random, but I think in that thread OP asked about SMB3.
I just remembered when I played SMB3 back in the day and, unlike today, we didn't really care about the story, I just mashed buttons while the minimalistic text between worlds showed up (I even had it in japanese because famiclone and bootlegs). So I remembered what mattered while playing SMB3 wasn't following a story or some sort of "progression" which needed saves. So it wasn't really a problem, although I agree it was a limitation and having the option to save is always better, games in general were different so unless they were RPGs or something similar, you didn't really need saving, you just expected to play the first levels a LOT of times, and the reward for getting good was more difficult levels.

I also agree with this guy:

For 1 and 2, the GBC remakes. For 3, either SNES or GBC (I personally like the SNES version better, but the GBC version has an exclusive bonus dungeon).

If a Metal Slime/Metaly shows up, disregard absolutely everything else and attack it. They like to flee faster than the motherfucking Road Runner.

I finished up DQ2 a couple of days ago and there were really only two little bits that I had to grind for - once after I got the Princess in my party and another time at the end to be able to safely get to the villain's fortress.

However, if you like RPGs where NPCs tell you exactly where to go, with tiny worlds and clear signs that point you in the right direction - don't play DQ2. The world is huge and you have to explore all over the place. Once you get the ship you can go everywhere, and you'll have to back track a lot to find everything. I enjoyed it, but if you need a railroad you may hate it.
