DS version is fine; you can just ignore the somewhat bland extra stuff since it's never in the way, but some might find the Toei-animated cutscenes triggering

If portability isn't an incentive and emulation not a deterrent, there's no reason not to play the original instead

I played Dragon Quest 5 and 6 on the SFC despite not speaking Japanese. They have fan translations after all

If you've never played it, just play the official localization; there's no real reason for not doing so, except for high-concept-performance-level freestyle autism.

I have a DS cart I use on my 3DS, but the extra content feels kind of sloppy. Though it's a good fallback if you're interested in the encyclopedia-type extras and Toei-animated cutscenes of the PS version, but just can't deal with the loading times.

Again, simply play the original. Perfectly serviceable translation, and 10/10 golden age RPG flava
