Don't use zsnes 1.51. It breaks for Mario RPG and has glitches/freezes. Sound emulation is off.

Your choices:
>Snes9x

Grab a modern version. Easiest option.

>bsnes .73

Easier to use older version of bsnes, which is a high accuracy emulator.

>RetroArch

Multi-system emulator. Has bsnes and snes9x cores. Superior sync and shader options.

>feels wrong

That's a lot vaguer. That could be anything. You mean it's off visually? Or it looks wrong? I'd recommend a CRT monitor at 240p at 960p with a shader. Lots of options out there. LCDs are kinda bad for SD stuff. Although you can try CRT Geom or a variant.

They really do look best on CRT tvs. CRT + original hardware + RGB cables is godly. Still images can't really capture it. The raster (black lines) always appears more obvious.

For emulation shaders/filters there's two kinds of things:

1. Adapting SD games to HD screens.

These HD displays are very different than SD CRTs, and it's a legitimate question and problem to figure out how to adapt SD games to HD screens. Right now there's zero consensus on how to do this.

A perfect shadowmask CRT shader might need 8000p or more resolution. If we were to do that, the games would look exactly the same as on a CRT TV. But since we can't really do that, we do all these kind half measure CRT shaders which take more from aperture grille displays than shadowmasks. Plus, you need to use integer scaling.

Other options include smoothing shaders, which have a small following but otherwise remain fairly controversial. Then there's blur shaders.

2. Replicating nostalgia/gimmicks

These are nice, and nice as options, but they are not essential. Usually extraneous stuff that's not really needed.

>but all filters and shaders look absolutely repulsive.

I like CRT Geom. Only works with integer scaling though.

>implying this isn't perfection

Ha, I bet you didn't even know that this was a shader until you opened it up.

Shaders general.

>crt geom sharpness
>blargg ntsc rgb

Pretty good. Some ringing.
