Zoomers cannot possibly grasp the scarcity mentality we grew up with. A bad video game was still a video game, in the same way that shitty microwave pizza is still pizza.

This. So many games you never got to see past the first couple levels because you only had so many quarters. Getting to play them again wihtout the financial constraint is so liberating. I would have never seen the ending of Dragon's Lair or made it to the last level of Shinobi back in the day, it probably would have taken hundreds of quarters.

The one game I actually did play through to completion in the arcade was Golden Axe. Me and my brother were waiting on our pizza at the local Round Table and for some reason we were just killing it and got way farther than usual. My brother went back to my parents to plead for some emergency funds so we could finish the job while I tried to stay alive so we didn't lose out progress. Finally beat the game and it actually had a short but well-made ending sequence. Watched it with pride then went and ate some pizza. Good times all around That Round Table also had the 4-player Ninja turtles cabinet and Mortal Kombat. I miss the 90's.

for me it was God of War. Ares in God mode was sooooo fucking cheesy but there was no way I was going to quit after finally beating the clones....except I broke my controller so I had to quit anyway

The SNES was the best for fits of rage, The controllers were light, had no analog sticks to fuck up and the cord stopped them before they actually hit a wall. I chucked those controllers plenty of times and they survived, can't say the same about my dualshocks, rip in pieces

>I knew it existed, but couldn't convince my parents why I needed it

Lol, this. I thought I would just live without save states because I was used to games that could mostly be plowed through in one sitting but then I got Resident Evil and realized that unless I only ever wanted to see the first hour of the game over and over again I'd have to go begging for a memory card.

And good luck explaining to your boomer parents why the fucking expensive-ass console they just bought doesn't work right without extra parts that were sold separately. I had to come up with some tortured analogy about how if you buy a truck you might end up needing a camper shell even if it didn't come with one originally.
