Well really it went the other way: people stopped paying for good games, so they started making only shit games or only biggest sequels guaranteed to sell.

BTW, the same happened with music when Napster became a thing in around 2000, see graph. Their profits quartered despite of iTunes and such. They only flatlined now with streaming meme, but that's off-topic.
