Maxis localized A-Train III for DOS, Mac and Amiga back in 1992. If it had sold better, we most assuredly would have gotten IV and V for Windows platforms or something.

A-Train didn't catch on because it was a tycoon sim and city-builder in one: your goals were profit-based, but the ultimate product would usually be large urban areas. The materials mechanic also meant resources gathered still needed to be transported around the playing field for buildings to spring up, which isn't as instantaneous as zoning in SimCity games. The concept wasn't foreign to Japanese players (who themselves loved to precisely manage train schedules as though it were programming in assembly), but it was to Western gamers.

The only games not worth playing, from what I can tell, are A-Train II (might as well play the first game, which was more of a puzzle romp), 6 (PS2-only, so less modding + not everyone wants to emulate and maybe not have mouse options), and 8/HX (the prototypes for 9, currently the best in the franchise). Also, most of the games aren't yet translated, so it's best to stick with 3/Maxis or 9. A shame, since A-Train on the PS is the best version of A-Train IV sans mouse controls!
