Because it was a huge trainwreck / 100 car pileup of mismatched styles of everything from guns to items to monsters.

PERSONALLY, I never minded it - if it gets people playing and liking DOOM I can dig it, I even tried it myself but it was too overwhelming for me. The maker even later included a means to limit the style of monsters and shit that appear but I think that was after the award came out.
