>best seller on PC and MAC
>innovative
>influencial, more than half of the things Duke Nukem 3D and other Build games are known for were taken straight from Dark Forces

>not even the recent sourceport brought any traction to the game

>no modern source port for this game
>only option is DOSbox

How hard is it to make a source port for a classic game like this that can run it as modern resolutions with modern features, ala Eduke? I know how for loops and if statements work lol.

>What was the first video game you bought with your own money?
Picrel - with my pocket money at least. The first game I bought with an actual paycheck was possibly Jedi Outcast.

>Did you enjoy it?
I loved it, but would have loved a turd if it was Star Wars themed at that age. I still though, even with some perspective think DF is a great Doom clone in its own right. One of the first ones to have vertical aiming as well as horizontal, and some (for the 90s at least) genuinely still scary moments.

>Do you still own it?
Yes - I although the CD is buried in my loft somewhere. The version I most recently played I bought on Steam, and used a mouselook mod, still a pretty fun game to play.

I recently bought some of the older Star Wars games on steam to have a bit of nostalgia from when I remembered Star Wars being good. Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, the Kyle Katarn shit. However, I don't remember them being so dark? And I can't even play Jedi Knight because whenever I move my mouse everything spasms like crazy. When you play these older games on modern hardware, how do you go about setting things up so they actually work right?

Beat Star Dark Forces Wars with some referencing the guide and the last few levels on easy, now idea how 90s gamers accomplished this on higher difficulty with keyboard controls, maybe the game actually becomes easier with aim assist or something. Onward to Jedi Knight!

In this day & age this game is the most criminally underated and historically overlooked FPS. It was a stepping stone and deserves its place in FPS history in between Doom and Duke Nukem 3D

> jumping / crouching (crouch to dodge, navigate through vents)
> alt fire
> level design more grounded in reality that isn't just about senseless mazes but which depicts actual, though sci-fi and unrealistic, places (prison, mine, refuelling station, cities, etc)
> realistic locational transitions between some of the levels
> sector over sector and multi-floor level design (the famous revolving staircase from Duke3D's first level, yeah DF did it first...)
> emphasis on sector effectors and cool effects in general
> 3D models (turrets)
> cracked walls you can blow up
> inventory items (night vision goggles..)
> trip mines

>story driven gameplay with cutscenes and mission objectives (sidekick's sole purpose being to lay it out for the player...)

This game did so much I'm probably forgetting a ton of obvious things. There are the smaller things also like the multi-switches, something Build games also borrowed; parallaxed floors (not just skies); breakable glass; floor aligned sprites; having to solve actual puzzles for progression, etc

If you think all that is coincidental, you need to realize Dark Forces was a best seller on both PC and Mac. Between that and the fact that it's based on Star Wars, a nerd thing other devs were fans of (see Luke Skywalker in DN3D) there is no way the devs of subsequent devs in the same genre didn't play this game.

why doesn't it get the attention of other 90s shooters? It is so fantastic, I recently played and it feels very advanced, Y axiz movement, interesting story, cutscenes, and music, good enemy design. Overall super fun

I don't really see this game brought up much when people talk about fun Doom clones from this era. Do you think this game is good?

This game is better than DOOM both in terms of gameplay and on a technical level.
