It's split between fighters and roguelikes. Both offer a lot of tension as well as interesting decisions to make. Fighters take it in a fast-paced player vs player competitive direction that relies on reflexes and mind games trying to out think your opponent.

Roguelikes are slower paced and turn based but the odds are usually stacked against you abd though each move might take time they're all important. Winning requires strategy and knowing how to use the random elements at your disposal to win despite the odds.

I love many many games and genres, but those two take the cake for me.

I'm just old and like some games from every era. I think the notion of retro vs modern gaming is silly, they're all just games to me but I'm fine with the structure of the board here.

I play them from all eras but yes, if you only wanted to play them from the 90's there's certainly tons to spend time on. I could probably happily just play '98 forever.

I'm an oldish fart and honestly I've never actually met someone else around my age who thinks that. Several like me also still like older games, but I've only seen that kind of hatred for anything new from posters here.

It makes the most sense. They're very similar companies in many ways, but one has thrived and the other went bankrupt then got bought put for pennies on the dollar by a Korean pachinko company. It's not hard to see who made better decisions. That's what could have gone wrong. As is Capcom makes shit tons of money with almost zero risk.

Fighting games and Roguelikes are the best genres for this both retro and modern. Pick whether you want it action based or turn based and sink your teeth in.

I meant boring challenges, at least to me. I love fighting games, but think they're awful in single player mode. Okay for practicing execution and timing, but pretty bad otherwise.
